There are moments in life that linger long after they have passed, and Hope Takes Flight was one of those moments. Since 2021, delicate paper doves have filled Emmanuel’s Yard, carrying with them the collective prayers, hopes, and reflections of a community during the profound challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each dove bore the personal imprint of its creator—a whispered memory, a lament, or a prayer for brighter days. Suspended together, the doves took flight as one, a visual testament to the strength found in unity and shared experience.
Now, four years later, with their wings stilled, the doves make way for fresh expressions. Having been carefully removed from their location, they will be released one final time. In honour of the heartfelt writings they carry, and with respect for the confidentiality of their messages, the doves will be transformed into ash. The ash will then be scattered in the garden at Emmanuel’s Yard, a space that has long been a place of worship, faith, hope, community, and growth. There, amidst the plants and flowers, they will return to the earth—a lasting reminder of resilience, hope, and renewal.
This community art installation, inspired by artist Michael Pendrey, was coordinated by Sam Whiley, Co-Founder of Emmanuels Yard, local artist and Spiritual Director. With the help of Mike Millard and many volunteers who facilitated this project, over 500 people stepped forward to offer their voices during a difficult time. As we bid farewell to the doves, we are reminded of the power of naming what is important, lamenting what is lost, and finding hope and strength in moments of shared reflection and renewal.
